JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, analyzes, constructs, and investigates vehicular accidents and personal injuries of students and employees involving school buses and other vehicles owned and/or leased by Houston ISD. Provides and conducts safety and driving training for school bus operators, HISD personnel, and administers direct field supervision of school bus operations.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Investigates accidents for all HISD owned and/or leased vehicles. Contacts parents and campus staff regarding accident specifics and travels to hospital to greet parents of students, if necessary.
- Assists local police departments to secure accident scenes involving HISD vehicles. Notifies Risk Management of any possible environmental contamination. Transcribes drivers' statement into permanent Accident Report and develops documents of all accidents.
- Serves on the Accident Review Board. Teaches and trains the state-mandated school bus driver certification and recertification course through The Texas Education Agency; serves as instructor for the mandated special needs Transportation; Operation Lifesaver (national railroad safety course); School Bus Watch (anti-terrorist training); Kid Safe (child passenger safety car seat technician); National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course; confers with new-hires on the process for obtaining a Commercial Driver License with School Bus and Passenger endorsements.
- Administers remedial behind-the-wheel training to drivers as required by the Accident Review Board. Obtains and analyzes motor vehicle records four times per year. Attends Admission, Review, and Dismissal's special needs student academic program review regarding transportation needs.
- Conducts random searches of school buses for drug paraphernalia that service alternative schools and conducts random driver license checks on drivers at various motor pools.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED
WORK EXPERIENCE: 6 months to 1 year
TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION: Microsoft Office, Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier), Hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, and screwdriver), Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, and forklift) Class B, CDL with endorsements, Texas Education Agency Certification Kid Safe Child Passenger Safety Technician Certified Trainer
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.
BUDGET AUTHORITY: No budget development activity is required.
PROBLEM SOLVING: Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures or services.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS: Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.
COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS: Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS: Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs. Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates.
WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Ability to carry and/or lift up to 15 to 44 pounds.
