The Office of the City Attorney for the City of Houston (the OCA) provides legal services to the City, its elected and appointed officials, and its employees while adhering to the following guiding principles:

Composed of approximately 100 of Houstons finest attorneys working in 10 legal practice sections, the OCA handles personal injury, commercial and civil rights litigation, major commercial and real estate transactions, and a diverse array of human resources, labor and employment matters, while also counseling the municipal corporation on economic development, constitutional, election matters, ethics and quality of life matters, and preparing City ordinances governing Houston and its citizens.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The OCA seeks a skilled, energetic, team-oriented Senior Paralegal who is self-motivated and can work independently on various complex paralegal assignments with the attorneys in the Torts and Civil Rights Section.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Performs investigative functions and research legal issues in preparation for court cases.
Assisting attorneys in responding to discovery, ordering records, e-filing and e-serving in state and federal courts.
Maintaining attorney calendars and schedules; working with court staff to obtain hearing dates and trial schedules.
Performs confidential and sensitive assignments for the City Attorney and other attorneys.
Performs other administrative or paralegal responsibilities as assigned, including organizing files, electronically maintained.
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.
Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate and a certificate in paralegal or legal assistant studies. An associates degree may be substituted for the above certification requirement. Above average academic performance is preferred.
Five years of experience as a paralegal at a comparable professional organization, law firm, or corporate legal office are required. An additional two years of paralegal experience may be substituted for the certificate in paralegal or legal assistant studies.
Preference will be given to candidates with:
Excellent organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities/deadlines.
Experience working with multiple attorneys.
Strong drafting research and writing skills.
The ability to develop and package high quality written communications that are clear, concise, and well organized.
Must be willing to work extended hours as needed to accommodate case load demands.
Ability to work under pressure and without close supervision, and to independently produce error-free documents.
Advanced level or higher proficiency in the use of Office 365 suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and SharePoint, and have the ability to quickly grasp specialized software programs.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6

Salary Range: $45,110.00 - $47,000.00

INTERMEDIATE: Basic formatting and create a variety of templates, mail merges in Word; create primary key to associate data between multiple tables, create a select query in Access; create, modify, and format charts, use graphic objects to enhance worksheets & charts in Excel; add special affects to presentation (design and animation) in PowerPoint; reply, forward, print and delete an e-mail message in Outlook.
ADVANCED: Manage table data, sort and filter merges in Word, create a split form and report and back up your databases in Access; use the filter and formula functions to manipulate data in Excel; transition presentation slides, link Excel charts to presentation and add voice in PowerPoint; delete e-mails from the Inbox, Sent Items and Deleted Items folders, Add, edit, move and delete appointments on your calendar.
EXPERT: Produce table of contents, footnotes, endnotes, bookmarks in Word, manage Macro commands, and manage database objects in Access, use advance formula functions (VLOOKUP, IF, IS) manage macro commands, group rows in Excel; publish presentation online, embed objects into presentation in PowerPoint; managing multiple calendars, set rules for incoming mail, create subfolders for mail to be placed in Outlook.
