Nursing Educator Position in Nursing Education
Ideal candidate must have a BSN and five years clinical nursing experience in oncology or assigned specialty practice area to include two recent years teaching experience. (Nursing Orientation, classroom and one on one). With preferred degree, three years clinical experience in oncology or assigned specialty practice area to include two years teaching experience.
The primary purpose of the Nursing Educator is to serve as a nursing education expert in the design, implementation and evaluation of curriculum to meet the learning needs of nursing staff and visitors to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Applies educational and technical knowledge to create and present instructional materials using effective adult learning, education and training methodology. Tailors program delivery to audiences based on educational need, skill level and learning style. Assists with the implementation and evaluation of instructional materials and revises them using evaluation data. Collaborates with clinical nurses, managers and other members of the health care team to plan and evaluate educational interventions. Develops presentations and publications to educate healthcare professionals. Documents the teaching/learning process and outcomes in accordance with standards. Integrates knowledge of staff development standards, principles of oncology practice, age-specific care needs, institutional goals and standards and current professional practice standards in the design of education programs. Develops objectives of educational programs and serves as expert on complex patient care issues.
- Serves as a performance consultant for assigned clinical areas of responsibility.
a. Assesses learning/development needs of individual staff and groups of staff in collaboration with the nursing management team.
b. Analyzes patterns/trends in performance.
c. Develops action/learning plans to address gaps in clinical performance.
d. Mentors unit coaches in their role of supporting learners on the unit.
e. Identifies high risk/problem prone/low frequency competencies in collaboration with the unit leadership and develops strategies for assessing these competencies.
f. Participates in the assessment of house wide and unit-based competencies of staff.
2. Designs, implements, and evaluates educational programs for all levels of nursing.
a. Considers needs of the targeted individual/groups of individuals when designing educational offerings.
b. Designs sound educational offerings that:
Address the assessed needs.
Outline well-constructed educational objectives.
Deliver content that is organized and evidence-based.
Apply adult learning principles effectively.
Incorporate strategies to address a variety of learning styles of participating individuals.
Utilize teaching methods that are congruent with objectives.
c. Coordinates offering of programs with unit(s) activity/work flow and staffing challenges in mind.
d. Demonstrates competency in the presentation of the offering, incorporating sound presentation standards.
e. Evaluates offerings, both summative and formative, with the following in mind:
Learner evaluation of offering effectiveness.
Achievement of teaching objectives.
Impact of offering on practice and processes.
f. Utilizes evaluation feedback to improve the quality of future educational offerings.
g. Ensures instructional integrity and application of content to the profession of nursing as it relates to functioning as a nurse planner for Continuing Nursing Education activities.
- Demonstrates professional accountability by maintaining proficiency in assigned role and involvement in professional organizations.
a. Demonstrates knowledge of policies, procedures, practice and regulatory standards and suggesting strategies for improving compliance.
b. Supports and aligns goals with those of Nursing Education, Department of Nursing and the Institution.

d. Practices responsiveness through visibility in assigned areas and responding in a timely manner to requests for service.
e. Seeks feedback from colleagues, unit leadership, learners and other customers for the purpose of improving personal performance and services.
f. Serves as a change agent and champion of performance improvement projects.
g. Participates in PI activities in the department, unit assigned as well as the Division of Nursing.
h. Leads/facilitates and participates in PACTs, committees, task forces as assigned, using sound facilitation skills, executing actions to obtain desired outcomes by deadline dates, evaluating the quality/quantity of outcomes.
i. Documents educational activities according to department standards.
j. Submits abstracts for posters/podium presentations for various internal/external professional conferences.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
Preferred: Master's degree in healthcare related field.
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN).
Preferred: Certification in oncology or specialty practice area.
