We have the unique and significant role to partner with NASA at Johnson Space Center (JSC), to be part of every human spaceflight program – the International Space Station (ISS), NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which will carry astronauts into deep space, and Gateway, the orbiting platform providing the home for astronauts to work and travel back and forth to the moon’s surface, and serving as the platform for deep space exploration. From critical systems on the ISS to enable astronauts to live and work in space; to performing advanced development for systems leading to deep space exploration; to being part of the foundation for Gateway.

We also partner with NASA at JSC, the only NASA center in the United States to curate all astromaterial samples returned from exploration missions, to perform curation services, orbital debris analysis, and basic research to further humankind’s understanding of the origins of our solar system.

What you’ll do all day

  • Serve as the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) Integrated Performance (IP) Deputy Lead Engineer and work directly with the Lead Engineer, CCP Chief Engineers, subsystem managers, and other engineering resources supporting the CCP program
  • Assist the Lead Engineer (SpaceX) in the management and technical direction of the integrated performance team
  • Coordinate and integrate the Directorate's CoFR (Flight Readiness Assessment) process and presents pre-FRR summaries to Directorate leadership
  • Supports the resolution of technical issues including briefing Engineering Review Boards and CCP Boards
  • Lead discussions among all stakeholders (engineering, ISS, S&MA, FOD, HH&P)
  • Integrates and technically adjudicates data ( analysis, hardware configuration, testing results, and functionality for applicable flight phases to develop an integrated risk position
  • Formulates an integrated technical recommendation with risk reduction options and present to program management
  • Present status, results, and decisions to various Control Boards
  • Perform independent technical assessment and position for the CCP Chief Engineer for at-risk level for requirements, hazards, operations, analysis, testing, and flight rule/LCC development or modification
  • Provide Mission Console support as IP Chief Engineer
  • Resolution of integrated technical problems both in the progression of risk reduction efforts and pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight anomalies and issues, design trades, testing (SMC-S-016), and analysis methodology
  • Develop flight-specific certification tasks related to IV&V and Verifications as a result of recurring mission needs and unique mission design, requirements, hardware configuration, performance, or operational change
  • Integrate changes, issues, and risks within the IP Engineering and Program team to ensure technical assessment has the breadth and depth of all affected areas, specifically System Managers, Sub-System Managers, and Program Flight Phase Leads, and Office Manager
  • Support/Present to International Partner for pre-mission, mission, and post-mission briefings and respond to any inquiries
  • Work in a team environment and report to the team lead to provide status on progress and issues and for support.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with the NASA customer Commercial Crew partners.
  • Interface frequently with inter-organizational disciplines, NASA System Managers, and operational customers
  • Perform other duties as required

Minimum requirements for this position:

  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and ten (10) years of direct engineering experience, or an MS degree from an accredited engineering school and eight (8) years of direct engineering experience, or Ph.D. and four (4) years of direct engineering experience
  • Basic knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in the space hardware field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, and material selection
  • Knowledge of systems engineering principles and associated documentation (for example ICD, EIS, PTRS, V&V Plan)
  • Experience with requirements flow down and traceability
  • Experience with risk formulation, analysis, and tracking
  • Ability to prepare written documents and to verbally present at various meetings.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision
  • Experience in managing and leading a team
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products
  • MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN

Requisition Preferences:

  • Experience with NASA JSC Flight Hardware Life Cycle, Certification, and Engineering processes
  • Experience with the design, assembly, verification, testing, and operation of space hardware
  • Experience with the development of space systems requirements documents including PTRS and Verification and Validation documents (V&VD), and ICD
  • Working knowledge of NASA and JSC standard practices and requirements including safety, fault tolerance, and unique disciplines
  • Familiarity with NASA/JSC documentation databases and share point sites as well as typical systems engineering products
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision
  • INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional certification
  • Experience with hardware testing and verification
  • Experience with design trade studies, risk analysis, and system analysis of space hardware
  • Self-motivated, team player, and adaptability to a dynamic environment
