Responsible for reviewing medical records to assure proper billing of the medical record, comparison of physician chosen CPT and ICD-10 codes to the physicians' documentation to substantiate the level of coding, physician services to include identification of professional services in and complete review of medical records to accurately optimize all professional services documented for billing.

This position is full-time (40 hours/week) Monday - Friday. Employees are required to work our normal business hours of 8:00am – 5:00pm EST. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and processes claim edits/rules for accuracy as well as insurance and coding compliance.
  • Maintains less than 5 day lag from create date for aging of edits.
  • Completes Charge Entry within 5 business days of receipt.
  • Audits chart notes for documentation to support coding.
  • Serves as resource/mentor to Charge Capture Specialists; including training of new processes
  • Trains new hires, clinical staff (EMR service order entry), clerical staff (ETM processes); including troubleshooting
  • Provides weekly status reports.
  • Performs general office duties as assigned.
  • Ability to analyze problems and brainstorm solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to create and analyze spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;  excellent follow-through and maintain confidentiality as required.
  • Serves as subject matter expert and authoritative resource for the department.
  • Excellent communication skils.
  • Excellent time management and organization al skills.
  • Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with principles for service excellence.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)
  • ICD-10 and CPT training or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years experience working with medical coding claims
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Excel (general spreadsheet navigation, data entry and sorting), Word (creating and editing word documents), and Outlook (email and calendar)
  • Experience working with Electronic Health Records
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders

Telecommuting Requirements: 

  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy 
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable) 
  • Must be able to connect directly into internet – via hard wire (either directly to modem or router) 
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coding Certification from accredited association:  AAPC or AHIMA
  • Knowledge of Centricity Business, eClinical Works, Harvest, Athena and/or Orchard

Soft Skills:

  • The ability to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks in a reasonable amount of time
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Have the flexibility to fill in when needed as cross-coverage may be required
