Position: Product Manager Bearings

Summary of the Role

The Product Managers primary responsibility is to provide research and analysis, product planning and management, product marketing, training and technical support to achieve the national financial targets for the company. The Product Manager understands and prioritizes product, supplier, and market requirements, helps support the company vision and works closely with General Managers, Account Manager, suppliers and global product managers to ensure sales and gross profit goals are achieved. Reporting to the Materials and Technical Service Manager, the Product Manager often serves in an inter-disciplinary role, bridging gaps between the Product Business Unit and teams of different expertise.

Advanced product knowledge and comprehensive pricing experience in the Bearing industry are required for this position. The Product Manager may be engaged in activities such as classroom training, supplier negotiations, annual budgeting and strategic planning.

Responsibilities

  • Must maintain 100% commitment to safety policies and procedures

  • Recommends present and future products held in the portfolio by reviewing product specifications and requirements, supplier performance and evaluating new product ideas.

  • Assesses market competition by comparing the company's product to competitors' products.

  • Manages supplier performance by comparing performance against the market and the Companys objectives.

  • Participates in supplier request for proposals by supporting purchasing with product knowledge, market and competitor information.

  • Increases product market share by developing product sales strategies.

  • Assesses market data by calling on customers with key account and account managers evaluating the sales call results.

  • Prepares short-term and long-term product sales forecasts which support the PBUs growth strategy.

  • Optimizes inventory turnover and product availability by reviewing and recommending inventory levels to purchasing.

  • Introduces and markets new products by developing implementation plans with sales, marketing, and purchasing.

  • Determines customers' needs by specifying the research needed to obtain market information.

  • Provides product training to improve product knowledge and grow sales.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education; reviewing professional publications; and participating in industry groups.

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing assigned objectives.

  • Adjustment to working hours as required to communicate with Asian factories in their associated time zones

  • Travel to Asian factories at a minimum of 1-2 times per year to develop a working knowledge of, and relationships with our manufacturing partners and their factories

  • Frequent US travel to provide technical support for Account Managers and their customer base

Research and Analysis

  • Research and analyze market conditions to formulate sales growth tactics

  • Identify key competitor and product trends

  • Implement supplier product performance improvement initiatives

  • Articulate end market requirements and opportunities

Product Knowledge, Planning and Management

  • Support sales and marketing with the necessary product knowledge and technical expertise including, but not limited to conducting project presentations, developing sales tools and training materials

  • Must have working knowledge of the following bearing applications:

  • Rolling element bearing types & nomenclature (i.e., SKF and Timken part-numbering system designations);

  • Basic bearing load determination and life calculations per ISO and ABMA standards;

  • Failure analysis of bearings (field analysis experience in failure cause & prevention);

  • Rolling element bearing manufacturing machining methods and materials/material processing methods employed;

  • Plain bearing (bushing) design and implementation (i.e., Garlock DU bushing both metallic and composite versions);

  • A basic understanding of US Government HTS codes for import of bearings/bushings ;

  • Provide input for marketing collateral development

  • Drive ongoing improvement in product sales and profitability

  • Manage and communicate with cross functional teams

  • Manage product-related support, feedback and inquiries from customers

    Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to manage and adjust multiple priorities and projects to support business needs and meet critical deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and externally, both written and verbally.

  • Requires good computer proficiency, including Word, Excel, and particularly customer relationship management tools.

  • Must have mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn about how our products are produced and used by our customers.

  • Must also have strong organization skills, possess problem-solving capabilities, and have excellent customer service skills.

  • Requires ability to organize and prioritize workload and be able to interact effectively with all types of people in a dynamic and fast-paced environment

    Education & Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Masters degree preferred

  • Preferred working experience with a major bearing manufacturer

  • Minimum 8 years of bearing product category management;

  • Minimum 10 years of sales experience in an industrial business-to-business, large or strategic customer segment

  • Must be willing to travel to Asia as required as well as US travel to support Account Managers
