This is a unique opportunity to join a team at the frontline of applied healthcare analytics.  You will have access to some of the largest and deepest clinical and claims data repositories in the United States, an extraordinary landscape to explore and enrich.  You will contribute to some of the leading healthcare analytic capabilities available on the market today while also developing entirely new analytic categories for tomorrow.  And you will have the opportunity to make broad-scale impact across the healthcare universe: practitioners and hospitals. payers and employers, life science companies, and, most importantly, patients.

We are looking for candidates who are, above all, passionate about developing and deploying novel analytics to improve the health care ecosystem.  Candidates should have a strong combination of analytic acumen and healthcare data expertise. 

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.     

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the discovery and development of new methods and models using a broad range of data modeling and analysis techniques
  • Collaborate with product management, engineering, clinical leadership, client services and other functions to refine and deploy capabilities
  • Design, develop and maintain data models that support structured and ad-hoc reporting
  • Contribute to team processes that improve efficiency and ensure the accuracy of data and deliverables
  • Active role in training, coaching and mentoring staff within methodology and in other functions
  • Communicate results and explain the product and business impact of new findings and capabilities to stakeholders in leadership, technology, sales, marketing and product teams
  • Very strong problem solving, quantitative and analytical skills with high degree of attention to detail
  • Intellectual curiosity, particularly regarding end users and business context to better inform innovation

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • 5+ years of experience working with, drawing insights from, and enriching complex datasets
  • 3+ years of experience with healthcare data (claims and/or EMR) with proven knowledge of healthcare data structures and standard methods and ontologies
  • 3+ years using SQL, Spark SQL or other querying languages to execute and develop new methods and algorithms across complex data environments (table joins, subqueries, etc.)
  • 2+ years of experience independently planning, executing and delivering novel data enrichments and new data models to support large ecosystems of users
  • 2+ years explaining data/analytics findings to stakeholders through written documentation and live presentations
  • Experience managing multiple processes and projects simultaneously in partnership with other functional teams (engineering, product management, client services, sales, etc.)
  • Telecommute is acceptable for this position
  • Must be available for early morning meetings (8-9 am EST) on occasion to collaborate with international colleagues
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD-level credentials in relevant field (ex. healthcare informatics, statistics, data analytics)
  • Experience with statistical and machine learning modeling techniques
  • Analytics experience in big data platforms (AWS, Hive, etc.)
  • Familiarity with issues and opportunities related to health equity in the United States
  • Knowledge of Optum capabilities, such as Symmetry, Impact Intelligence, Optum Performance Analytics, Optum Market Advantage

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $94,500 to $171,700.
